Going to Athens, Greece

July 1st, 2009

The 10th S.K.I.F. World Karate-Do Championships will take place in an Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece this month. This world karate event will attract about 80 countries to participate and compete. I am a member of Team U.S.A. and I am very excited to be there.

This is just like a karate dream. It is a long journey for me since my first karate tournament back in Indonesia in 1972.

Now, 37 years later, I am still competing.

My personal goal is very simple. I would like to inspire all aging martial artists that it is OK to be older and still competing in the World Karate-Do Championships. I look forward to going to the Dominican Republic next year for the S.K.I.F. Pan American Karate-Do Championships.

When you love to do something, you don’t quit.

I will never stop training in karate-do.

Never.

The Belt Test and Japan Festival

April 21st, 2009

This coming Saturday, April 25, 2009, all my karate students will take their kyu test (belt test) at the University of Houston.

Sunday, April 26, 2009, at Hermann Park, Houston, they will perform their karate demo in front of thousands of people during the Annual Japan Festival. Our karate group is invited to do the karate demo every year by the Japan Festival Organizers. This is a part of our community outreach.

I am very happy for all my dojo members.

It all started with how much I loved my karate-do – still do.

Do karate-do 100% – not 5% or train in karate-do only once a month.

TRAIN IN KARATE-DO VERY HARD AND DO IT EVERY DAY!!!!!!

Love Your Enemies

April 16th, 2009

Have you ever heard the phrase of  love your enemies?

As we get older, we are supposed to be yellow mellow toward our live decisions. I was once a little bit younger and I thought I was going to make all my dreams come true such as having a big house, a beautiful wife, money in the bank, traveling the world, having many friends around the world, higher education, higher karate dans etc.

Some, yes. I have accomplished and made my dreams came true. I received my Bachelors degree from the University of Houston. My Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) I earned from Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawa, 10th Dan, the Founder of the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF). I have traveled most parts of the world. Great friends of mine are everywhere and especially living in the USA, one of my great friends is a lawyer. I have only one  lawyer friend, Bob. I have known Bob for more than 30 years. Living in America, you must have a lawyer. If somebody wants to take you to the court of law, you better have a lawyer. I have been very happy with Bob’s legal assistances.

And some, I have not accomplished yet. I still have some enemies who know me very well. These enemies are not happy with me. I feel that they are not happy with themselves. I always try to make them my friends. Some of them, we used to work together. We used to be very good friends. And one day….we were not friends anymore.

Everybody has both friends and enemies. How do we get rid of enemies? Never. Bill Gates has enemies. The USA has enemies. Jesus and Muhammad have enemies.

Love your enemies.

How?

When somebody said unkind words through my guestbook of this website – did I delete those words? NO – I keep them. Let the world be the judge.

When you study the Daoism, you have to keep both sides. They are Yin and Yang things. Day and night. Sun and moon. Fire and water. High and low. Friends and enemies. Happiness and sadness. Love and hate. Young and old. Angels and monsters. Rich and poor. Black and white. Males and females. Life and dead. All kind of both sides. Keep them. They are supposed to compliment each other. In order to understand happiness, you must fully understand sadness. In order to appreciate the stage of a healthy mind, try to understand what is like being retarded or unstable.

I have been practicing the Daoism for over 20 years and I still have a hard time to understand love your enemies.

I will continue to learn the Daoism and I hope someday I can fully understand love your enemies.

“It is easy enough to be friendly to one’s friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.” - Gandhi

An Early Karate Class

April 13th, 2009

My private karate students trained hard early this morning.

Every morning, Monday through Friday, from 6AM to 7AM, I have 5 karateka who come to my private dojo to train with me.

This early karate class is 8 months old. They love this one hour non-stop karate training. It is like a “Stress Relief” program. The 5 karateka are professionals. They have very busy schedules from traveling to meeting all deadlines at work plus taking care of their families.

I push them every morning. They find karate is not all about Kihon Kata and Kumite  which they are 3 important karate parts. Karate is also about taking care of health, staying in shape and dealing with stress relief.

They are hoping that this early karate class will last for a long time.

I hope so too.

After all, I have been training in Shotokan for about 45 years now.
